North Korea to Host Blockchain And Crypto Conference

Conference Announcement

Leaving its shell for the time being, the Hermit Kingdom North Korea is inviting international experts to come to a conference on blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies in Pyongyang.

North Korea made a surprising revelation these days as it announced the Pyongyang Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Conference, Independentreports. People wishing to participate could get an all-inclusive package with activities like skating and bowling for just under $3,800 (3,300 €).

The announcement itself is a strong break from North Korea’s typical character of isolating itself from the international community and keeping itself largely out of trends in technology. However, this break might just be the country’s way of opening up, something it’s been doing slowly for the last few years.

Due to North Korea’s political alignments, it was no surprise to see the site mention that people possessing passports from South Korea, Japan, and Israel are not allowed to apply. Journalists are also asked to stay away from the event.

“Any mass printed propaganda or digital/printed material against the dignity of the Republic is not allowed,” the website added.

That statement is troubling, considering the fact that North Korea is known for having considerably vague rules for what it considers insulting or otherwise offensive.

The conference will take place in Pyongyang Science and Technology Complex and will last a week, starting on Thursday, April 18th, 2019.

It’s unclear whether North Korea has an ulterior motive for hosting the conference, but the fact that journalists are not invited arouses some suspicion, although press restrictions have always been common policies in events hosted by its regime. It’s worth keeping in mind that North Korea has been known to use cryptocurrencies as tools to escape sanctions in the past.

“The DPRK can be considered the safest country in the world. As long as you have a basic common-sense [sic] and respect for the culture and belief of other nations, you’ll be always welcome and enjoy [sic] like thousands of friends we’ve been hosting for the past 28 years and engaged in cultural, sports, science, or business relations,” the site’s FAQ said.
