MyEtherWallet: New Version, A Few Subtle Changes
Users may now dial down gas to a minimum, with the new feature of MyEtherWallet. The minimal gas price has been lowered to 0.1 GWEI, and is adjusted by increments of 0.1GWEI. This means the user has a bit more control over the spending of gas.
The wallet is available as a desktop app, able to work offline, but also runs as a web-based service and a Chrome extension.
Some of the additions include viewing the balance on the send page, and easier links to decrypt the wallet. The wallet is available for download at the publicGitHubpage.
MyEtherWallet also adds more newly minted tokens to its list, and loads the token balances on request, although this is not automatic, like the old version. The wallet is compatible with the Byzantium update, and it has not affected the way it works.
MyEtherWallet has been a central tool for the spreading of ERC-20 tokens following ICOs. Because of this, the web-based wallet has been subject to many attempts at hacking, most often including a cloned site. Because of the way the wallet unlocks, via keystone file upload or other methods, it is easy for hackers to make the naive user to supply the information.
But most threats come from social media and chats, where fake links and a warning message demand that the user sends the UTC file that unlocks the wallet. Therefore, MyEtherWallet has created a knowledge base constantly adding warnings and techniques for safe usage.
In addition, users of MyEtherWallet should be aware of a growing list of active and past scams and check addresses with a critical eye before sending funds. Always check the address against the list, but better never open MyEtherWallet from a link posted somewhere.
