CryptoKitties Gen 0 to Run Out Soon
The first significant crypto-collectible, CryptoKitties, will stop the new kitty minting process, making Gen 0 collectibles even rarer.
CryptoKitties will stop the process of Gen 0 kitty minting at the end of November, exactly a year after “minting” the very first crypto kitty. The game became a significant app that at one point helped bring about Ethereum’s mass adoption. However, the breeding of kitties came with unexpected side effects as the Ethereum network suffered overload and high gas prices due to the app’s popularity.
"That means this is your last chance to buy Gen 0 Kitties. These special Kitties often feature rare new traits, have the fastest breeding cooldowns, and are the only way to breed Gen 1 Kitties," the team announced in an emailed statement.
One of the last Gen 0 kitties will be given away in a special contest, along with another rare kitty collectible.
The real success of the game, however, is for Dapper Labs, the team behind the content of the game. Dapper Labs spun off from the parent company that launched CryptoKitties, Axiom Zen.
While kitties are ERC-279 tokens, their image, lineage and DNA rules actually belong to the Dapper Labs company, which specializes in collectible content creation. Recently, the business model managed to attract additional venture funding to the tune of $15 million.
"The evolution of true digital ownership and the interoperability of smart contracts creates new ways for consumers, creators, and platform providers to interact completely peer-to-peer, with no middlemen," said Roham Gharegozlou, CEO at Dapper Labs for betakit.com.
Crypto collectibles have spread on a secondary marketplace, including the WAXglobal market for virtual goods. However, the CryptoKitties activity has fallen in the past few months, and is burning under 1% of Ethereum’s gas, while during peak times the game consumed 30% of gas.
According to DappRadar, CryptoKitties had 454 users in the past 24 hours as of November 13. Other crypto collectible games so far have under five users.
