Cryptovest found new information on a dark web drug dealer arrested with $700,000 in crypto.
Cryptovest found new information on a dark web drug dealer arrested with $700,000 in crypto.
Gal Vallerius, a 36-year-old Frenchman, pleaded guilty to drug trafficking and money laundering after an arrest in 2017 when US authorities managed to tie his identity to the username “OxyMonster” in the dark web, The Daily Mailreports.
The man was traveling to Texas to attend the 2017 World Beard and Moustache Championships when he was caught by police and immediately brought into custody. Vallerius, married with one child, will serve a 20-year sentence in either France, Great Britain, or Israel, as he has citizenship in all three.
Police managed to find his identity by correlating his activities on LocalBitcoins with the “tip jar” that was set up in one of the most famous drug markets in the dark web. It appears that he didn’t use anonymizing services to launder the BTC first, making this one of many cases of incompetence.
Vallerius’ activities in the dark web market
It so happens that the market that Vallerius operated in is one that Cryptovest included in its investigation into dark web and underground markets on the internet.
After looking through the site, it becomes apparent that OxyMonster was one of the people running it. Though many threads with his username are now deleted from the market’s forums, we found references to him being an administrator.
A police report from 2017 found in a rather shady website shows that authorities were also aware of this. When probing a bit further, Cryptovest found that Vallerius was not an extraordinarily prolific vendor, but managed to sell high volumes of drugs in each of his transactions.
A total of 110 transactions took place, with 73 of them receiving reviews. Though it was impossible to find exactly when the last transaction was completed, review records indicate that Vallerius’ last sale was more than three months ago.
Interestingly enough, OxyMonster’s account was online for a brief period on October 4th, but there is no indication that Vallerius himself was the individual who accessed it.
The one thing that stood out in his profile was the fact that he has a stellar 5-star rating after over a hundred transactions, a rarity in this particular market.
