Bitcoin’s blockchain model makes it notoriously impossible to manipulate in any meaningful way, but that doesn’t mean that hackers can’t do other things to profit from its soaring value.

This time, one piece of malware known as CryptoShuffler has helped its masters earn a massive jackpot.

According to BleepingComputer, the malware’s Bitcoin wallet currently has 23.21 coins, which comes up to over $150,000 using today’s value.

The hackers used a simple, yet deceitful mechanism to siphon coins from several computers by sabotaging their clipboards.

When victims would copy Bitcoin addresses to their clipboards, CrypoShuffler would replace each address with its own.

The hope is that the victim would then paste the address when making a transaction and not notice that what came out is something different than what they copied. This incident happened enough times that CryptoShuffler was able to gain a hefty payout.

Looking through the malware’s wallet, we can see that it’s been accumulating small amounts of cash since September 27, 2016, peaking in volume towards the end of the year and then simmering down as mid-2017 approached.

According to Kaspersky Labs, the malware has been making rounds again, meaning that Bitcoin traders should be extra-vigilant as this year comes to a close.

When making transactions, always check that the destination address you paste matches the one that you copied. This is a simple way to ensure that you don’t get hoodwinked by a clipboard exploit.

If you notice any discrepancies in the addresses, immediately check your computer for malware and attempt to disinfect it before making any other transactions.

Since the virus’ mechanism is simple and obvious, it should be easy to detect its activity on any computer.

Mobile users aren’t excluded from hacking worries, however, as you might end up with malware on your phone that mines cryptocurrencies without your knowledge.

Threats are piling up, and it’s beginning to look like the 90s all over again. For hackers, this is heaven. But for everyone else, there are now more reasons to keep one’s guard up!
