Fake Trezor Wallets Floods the Market
The company warns users about fake wallet devices manufactured by an unknown vendor.
The manufacturer of the Trezor hardware cryptocurrency wallets warned customers about imitation Trezor One devices circulating on the market. The company does not know who produces and distributes the fake wallets but admits that they look very much like the original ones.
The company states that they have grown accustomed to clones and copy-cats, but this case stands apart. The usual imitations are produced by legitimate companies and marketed under different names, so that customers can differentiate them from the original. However, the recently discovered fake device is manufactured by an anonymous vendor and replicates the Trezor One in detail.
“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. — you have probably heard this proverb before. We have experienced it first-hand, as Trezor clones have been released over the years of our activity. However, in recent weeks, we have discovered something more startling. A one-to-one copy of Trezor One. In other words, a fake Trezor device, manufactured by a different, unknown vendor," the company warns in the press release.
The original Trezor One supports over 500 cryptocurrencies and has several security levels. Moreover, the latest update allows users to purchase coins right from their devices. At first glance, the fake wallets look exactly like genuine ones. However, the company provides several tips on how to tell them apart.
Fake vs. Original
Low price. If the device is much cheaper than the normal prices set by the manufacturer, there is a high chance that it is fake. Trezor urges customers to treat a steep discount as a red flag.
The hologram and the package. Though they try to imitate the original, there are some obvious details that allow a fake and a genuine Trezor One to be told apart. Please, refer to the manufacturer’s website before purchasing to make sure that you are buying a legitimate wallet.
The company recommends buying a Trezor One from trusted distributors such as the official Trezor shop, the official Amazon shop and other official resellers listed on the website.
As the fake is allegedly made in China, Trezor urges potential buyers to be extremely vigilant when purchasing devices on the Internet or from third parties.
"Be very cautious when buying on other marketplaces, such as eBay, Taobao, AliExpress, unknown Amazon resellers or other places. If you are not sure about the authenticity of the seller or the channel, always proceed with the official channels."
