CRYPTO: New Hollywood Movie Starring Kurt Russell & Luke Hemsworth Set for 2019 Release

Crypto-centered thriller movie set to hit cinema screens later this year, starring Kurt Russell, Alexis Bledel, Luke Hemsworth and Beau Knapp.

CRYPTO – a cyber-thriller which revolves around cryptocurrency, Wall Street, and the Russian mafia – is all set to release on April 12 this year.

The film, directed by John Stalberg Jr., and starring big names such as Kurt Russell, Alexis Bledel, Luke Hemsworth and Beau Knapp, was announced in June last year. It has been produced by Yale Productions, BondIt Media Capital, and Dynasty Pictures, and written by Carlyle Eubank and David Frigerio, with its basis in an original story by Jeffrey Ingber.

Watch the trailer for CRYPTO here:

The film follows an outcast Wall Street anti-money laundering executive, who unearths a connection between an obscure art gallery and a wide-scale criminal operation involving the Russian mafia using cryptocurrencies to launder money. When his father is kidnapped, the situation becomes personal for the former Wall Street exec who engages in a battle to save his father’s life.

The movie (judging by the trailer) appears to take a largely negative view of cryptocurrencies, depicting them as vehicles for illicit activities such as money laundering – so while it will certainly bring attention to cryptocurrencies, it might not be the sort of attention crypto advocates are looking for.

The pairing of crypto and Hollywood is hardly new – digital currencies have featured in numerous TV shows and films to date.

CBS legal drama The Good Wife, for example, referenced Bitcoin all the way back in 2012, in and episode which depicted protagonist Alicia Florrick working to defend a programmer who had invested a cryptocurrency against the Treasury Department.

Popular comedy sitcom The Big Bang Theory also featured crypto in an episode titled ‘The Bitcoin Entanglement’, which was aired on November 30, 2017. The episode depicted the main characters finding a laptop that contains Bitcoins.

A movie called Bitcoin Heist was also released in 2016 – it revolved around a team of hackers assembled by Interpol to plan a cryptocurrency heist in order to catch a notorious thief.
